Life As A Manse Intern

Working at Manse for the past thirteen months has been rewarding on so many levels. When I first entered Manse for the assessment day in March 2018, I was welcomed so dearly by Caroline and Gill in reception. With it being my first time visiting Horsforth, I quickly warmed to the town and the Manse team in particular.

When I received the news that I had been selected as the Intern for 2018-2019, I was so proud and relieved as, despite being hopeful, the other candidates were extremely strong.

I settled in gradually but comfortably, primarily aided by the fact that in my second week, the Manse team headed out to York Races. This was a perfect way to get to know the wider team in a relaxed way, whilst having fun doing so!

I have found that my role this year has been inextricably linked to my Economics and Finance degree (I may go as far as to say I have learned more this year than my previous two at university!). Not only have I developed my technical knowledge around financial planning, I have also gained a range of transferable soft skills, such as time management, organisation, and communication. Most of all, Manse has helped to enhance my confidence (a lot)! Taking a year in industry and applying my prior skills and technical knowledge has been so beneficial, and I intend to use my newfound knowledge and skills base to excel not only in my final year but my future job prospects also.

At Leeds Beckett University, a placement year allows you to complete a module for third year whilst conducting the year in industry, for which I obtained a first-class grade at Manse. I would never have achieved it without the support from the team and I can only thank them for being so helpful and willing.

Life at Manse has been great – the office has a perfect balance between hard work and having fun along the way. I feel like in any working environment, it is essential to have a sense of humour, irrespective of the seriousness of your job function, and this is in abundance here. Other than the first team building day at York races, we also had an activity day at Carlton Lodge which was an ideal way to further get to know the wider team from different departments and enjoy time away from the office together. What is fantastic about Manse is that there is such a variety of people and personalities, but the be all and end all is that we all put in equal effort together to provide the best service and experience we can for each and every client.

I am delighted that following from this placement year, Manse have asked me to come back one day a week whilst doing my final year at university, similar to Tom and Matt (two previous interns who are now full-time, extremely valued members of the team). This placement has had a hugely positive impact on helping me for the future, in the means of aiding me through my final year of university through the knowledge and skills I have learned, and also in the hope that I can kick-start my career in financial services here.

Overall, working at Manse Capital has been a fantastic experience. I have learned so much whilst being surrounded by positive, intelligent and helpful colleagues. I feel extremely grateful to have been given this opportunity and, despite looking forward to some time off for summer, I look forward to happily returning in September!
